Voluntary Village Relocation and Tiger Reserves

Sawai Madhopur, 26 Aug: Relocation of villages is a problem that exist in almost every tiger reserve, Tiger being a flagship and umbrella species that needs space for its survival and existence, they need human interference free protected area, but actually it's not happening for them.

In Rajasthan there are almost 4 Tiger Reserves at present, Sariska, Ranthambhore Phase I and II, Mukundra Hills and Ramagadh Vishdhari.

At present in Sariska 3 villages namely Haripura, Kraska and Peela Pani are still not voluntary relocated, but some villages relocated earlier, in Mukundra there are almost 16 villages out of which 1 is relocated, namely Kolipura, Rooppura,Akhwa (Bhukhi), Girdharpura, Kharlibawri, Laxmipura, Damodarpura, Mukundra Darrah Ganv, Ghati (Relocated), Roja ka Talab, Jawahar Sagar, Mashalpura, Narayanpura, Ambarani, Nosera, Bhaisrodgarh.

In Ramgarh Vishdhari there are almost 8 villages namely Bhairupura, Kaishavpura, Bhimganj, Jawra, Haripura, Gulkhedi, Gudhamakduka, Dhundhla ji ka Bada in which almost 5000 people are residing.

In Ranthambhore Phase I there mainly 8-9 villages and in Phase -II (Karauli) 44 villages are there.

The only way to relocate villages is on voluntary basis, compensation amout which was earlier Rs 10 lakhs per family has been increased to Rs 15 lakhs per family. But still relocation process is going on a very slow pace.

Though Surveys has been conducted at many places and process of relocation is underway. Imagine if this is condition of core and critical tiger habitat what is the condition of Buffer Areas.

If Tigers come across any human dominated landscape conflict is inevitable, overpopulation of Tigers in any reserve more than its capacity to hold tigers is another problem which creates Human-Tiger conflict situation other afe Human-Leopard or Man-animal conflict. Ranthambhore is already facing the same problem.

Shifting Tigers cannot be done without scientific methodology, also depends upon prey base situation and the way parks are being managed.

Unfortunately there no CA|TS accredited park in Rajasthan. Therefore until a strong conservation policy is being implemented situation of Tiger Reserves will always be vulnerable.
