The Honey Hunters

The Honey Hunters

Ranthambhore, 22 July: Sloth bears (Melursus ursinus) omnivores by nature can eat anything from termites to small berries, fruits, even some small mammals, birds to reptiles but it is believed that their favorite food is honey.

They are the Honey Hunters of the forest, bees make beehives on the height of large trees sometimes even in a dense shrub or sometimes in a cave or a cliff but obviously near a water source.

These cool resting places of forest attracts many animals including Tigers and sometimes near the huge tree where there is a beehive you can see a Tiger resting in a water hole.

Therefore in search of this delicious food Sloth sometimes comes across in conflict situations with Tigers.

Tigers who are not at all interested in honey don't like any disturbance at the resting place, so they sometimes chase away the bear or leave the place avoiding conflict.

Other Honey Hunters are Oriental Honey Buzzard a large raptor (Bird of Prey) and Honey Badger (Mallivora capensis) are found in eating honey and honey bee larvae.

Honey with nutritious value, rich in calories, sugar, fructose, glucose, maltose, and sucrose is a sweet delight for Honey Hunters of the forest.

The hairy fur of Sloth bears gives them a protective shield against the stings of the (female) worker bees. The male drone bees don't have a sting, therefore drones are no threat to any intruder.

It practically takes almost 3-4 weeks for bees to start producing honey in a new beehive but it will only take few seconds for the intruder to ransack the hive. Sometimes monkeys are also seen raiding a beehive.

Wolves of Ranthambhore

Wolves of Ranthambhore

Ranthambhore, 20 July: Ranthambhore is a habitat to many species but one them who is extremely secretive are the wolves.

They had a very unique and peculiar behaviour and this species is very less studied. They though live in pack but first bite from the kill belongs to the Alfa Male and Alfa Female and their pups, they only had the right to mate and reproduce and so on their society is based on the very disciplined system of hierarchy.

They hunt together but despite of many wildlife photographers nowadays only few lucky ones are there who actually saw them hunting.

If you follow a wolf it will easily disappear if your eyes gets distracted only for a few seconds, mostly nocturnal they hunt in night.

Sometimes they also follow some tribes those who keep sheep and goats and cattle and roam from one place to another like Nomads.

Its a risky task to lift a goat or a sheep from the vigil eye of the shepherd but the wolves sometimes had a upper-hand.

Not always they pick up cattle they're also seen killing chinkara, black buck and small mammals and reptiles as well.

Sometimes they also behave like a scavenger but only in rare conditions when there is scarcity of food.

Their close competitors are hyena and leopard but sometimes jackal also sneak into their food.

It is really bone chilling experience to hear them howling, their calls can be heard many kilometers away also.

Sawai Madhopur, Karauli, Dausa, Jhalawar, Baran, Kota, Bundi, Rajsamand, Churu, Pali and some other places are there in Rajasthan where you can watch wolves in wild.

But to watch them in wild is a lifetime experience, you need that during your safari luck favours you otherwise it will not be that easy to watch these elusive creatures.

Wolves are under threat due to habitat loss and illegal hunting and poaching, it's really need of the hour to conserve the species.
