Secret Life of Honey Badgers
Sawai Madhopur, 18 Aug: Honey Badgers are one of the most Secretive, Opportunistic, and very Elusive beasts, they are small in size but are very ferocious and hardly get scared of other animals even if it's a Tiger.
They are nocturnal and live a very secret life, the name honey badger suggests that they like honey or it's their main food but these badgers are very opportunistic hunters, from small reptiles and amphibians to small birds and mammals everything is on the list of their menu.
This is one of the creature which is least studied, we still actually don't know much about their behavior, there is actually no exact data available about their population estimation.
Though it is widespread across India but still to find out one of them is a very difficult task. Honeybadger or Ratel fur is black and white given by nature to them as a warning signal that I'm dangerous and ferocious keep away from me.
They are on poacher's target also due to some superstitious believes, which have no existence and authenticity according to the science.
You have to be very lucky if you find one during your safari, honey badgers are seen fighting or retaliating with animals more than four times their size, and winning the battle.
They are Least Concerned as per IUCN International Union for Conservation of Nature as they are widespread species in India Southwest Asia and Africa.
In Rajasthan, not only forests but rocky landscapes like Jawai also provides them good habitat. They have a presence in almost all Tiger Reserved of Rajasthan and also proposed Tiger Reserve like Kumbhalgarh.
Some tribal communities still track them for finding honey bee's beehive, as honey is not only a source food but is also a source of income.
It is time to conserve some of the lesser-known species before they vanish from our jungles.
