Leopards in the Land of Tigers

Article: Leopard very shy, elusive and agile creature often avoid conflicts with large predators, they usually keep a safe distance to avoid any encounter, most of the time they take their food high on tree so that no other animal should disturb them while they are feeding.

Especially when large predators like Tigers are around, they either run away from the scene or climb a high tree where bulky tigers can't get hold of them, even if there is a fully grown leopard direct conflict with tigers means certain death.

If in case these leopards want to steal some food from the tiger's kill they wait patiently at a safe distance and when the tiger leaves the kill after feeding, then they approach slowly and gradually at the kill of the tiger to steal a portion from it. And when leopard leaves it, then other animals like hyena, wolf, jackal, or fox approach it, though sometimes hyena can chase away leopards also.

Since years they are co-existing, and they know their limitations as well, as a small tiger cub is vulnerable if the parents are not around.

But in past some shocking footages came where a leopard was seen face to face with Tiger, in another incident in Sariska a leopard was seen feeding with Hyena as both of them are believed to be eternal enemies, in another incident also from Sariska a Tiger was seen killing a leopard, similarly, when a tiger was at a water hole a leopard was seen sitting on a tree and when the tiger left the place the leopard didn't come down, and waited for hours to come down. Even in Ranthambhore incidents were observed where Tiger is on the move and leopards are sitting on trees patiently.

In what circumstances leopard ate food with hyena is still a mystery, but in a Tiger, landscape leopards had to be very cautious, one wrong move could be fatal.

Co-existence is a universal principle established by Nature, Prey and Predator live together in a specific area according to their survival skills, there was a media documentary from Madhyapradesh probably Bandhavgarh where an abandoned Tigress cub survived by stealing food of the leopard, while her brothers were not so lucky, therefore survival skill is the most important key to encounter the obstacles of life.
